The Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, assured, Saturday, May 13, that“there is no pause at all in climate ambition” of France, after controversial statements by the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, who called on Thursday to stop producing new environmental standards in Europe.

On the occasion of the presentation of his plan to “green” the industry, the Head of State said he wanted a ” break “ in European regulations, in order to preserve local players subject to competition from countries with lower environmental prices.

“We don’t just want to be a green market, but to produce green on our soil. We have already passed a lot of regulations at European level, more than our neighbors (…). Now we have to execute, not make new rule changes, because otherwise we will lose all the players.explained Emmanuel Macron on Thursday.

“Today, we know how to reindustrialize by doing ecology”assured the president during his visit the next day to the Aluminum Dunkirk site. “Some wanted to make me say anything, but we were the first to defend the Green Deal (set of texts which should make it possible to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050) »he protested, adding: “Let’s apply and go to the end (of this Green Deal,) but let’s not add more. »

Words that caused trouble in Brussels

“You know that in recent years, under the impetus of France and the President of the Republic, we have carried out very ambitious policies on a European scale. It is the Green Deal in particular, it is the objective of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050”said Elisabeth Borne in Saint-Paul, on the island of Reunion, where she ends a three-day trip on Saturday.

“This legislation is ambitious, it allows us to meet our objectives, now we have to work to implement it and it is already a very important task”added the head of government, echoing the words of Emmanuel Macron, considering that it was not useful to “add standards to standards”.

The words of the Head of State caused trouble in Brussels, even in his own camp, which had not anticipated such an exit. On the European scene, it is indeed the conservatives of the European People’s Party (EPP) who are calling for a moratorium on several environmental texts of the European Green Deal.

“He straddles the horse of the EPP. It makes no sense “lamented Philippe Lamberts, co-president of the Greens group in the European Parliament. “It’s true that global warming is over, it’s really time to take a break…”quipped his “rebellious” colleague Manon Aubry, co-president of the radical left group (GUE) in the European Parliament. “We have been defending the idea of a legislative moratorium for several months. We are almost going to ask Emmanuel Macron for a copyright ”reacted for his part François-Xavier Bellamy, MEP Les Républicains (LR / EPP).

The Green Deal, or Green Pact, is the European Union’s package of key texts on the climate, the essentials of which (reform of the carbon market, end of sales of combustion engine cars, etc.) have been adopted, but whose part of it is still the subject of difficult negotiations.
