This is the most anticipated fashion evening of the year by industry observers. The Metropolitan Museum of Art gala in New York took place on Monday 1er May evening, in Manhattan. For insiders, it’s a bit like the Oscars: for the red carpet and the extravagant outfits that tread it, because no awards ceremony takes place. The event is followed, scrutinized, analyzed throughout the world. The highly respected New York Times And New Yorker each commented live on the red carpet on Twitter throughout the evening. On the Instagram social network, the hashtag #metgala is close to 2 million hits.
Every first Monday of May, celebrities, fashion designers and the powerful in the business get together for a charity dinner. It was Eleanor Lambert, the fashion journalist behind New York Fashion Week, who initiated this evening in 1948, with the aim of raising funds for the newly founded Museum’s Costume Institute, and to inaugurate at the same time its annual exhibition.
Since 1995, it is Anna Wintour, the very powerful editor-in-chief of the international editions of the magazine vogue, who is in charge of organizing the evening and fundraising. In 2022, the gala raised 17.4 million dollars (15.8 million euros). The entry ticket is set at $50,000, while an entire table reservation is close to $300,000. But not everyone can hope to go there. The guest list is indeed scrupulously studied and validated by Anna Wintour herself.
Each edition of the gala is thematic, in correlation with the fashion exhibition inaugurated on this occasion. We have seen in previous years Christian outfits in 2018, to stick to the theme “Angelic bodies: fashion and Catholic imagination” or even other very science fiction in 2016, for the exhibition “Manus x Machina: fashion in the age of technology.
The 2023 edition was a tribute to Karl Lagerfeld, in keeping with the exhibition “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”, visible until July 16. Died in 2019, the German couturier was one of the most famous and prolific of his generation. At the head of the Chanel house collections between 1983 and 2019, he was also the artistic director of the Italian house Fendi between 1965 and 2019, as well as of the Chloé house in the 1970s, then again in the 1990s, and of his eponymous line, from 1984 until his death.

On the red carpet of the gala, the theme of the evening made it possible to see many outfits from the archives: the actress and director Olivia Wilde in the violin dress imagined by the couturier in 1983 for Chloé, the British singer Dua Lipa in a Chanel dress worn by the German model Claudia Schiffer on the catwalk of the house in 1992 or Carla Bruni, in a black and white spring-summer 2001 Karl Lagerfeld dress. More contemporary creations from the Chanel house have also been seen, on Penelope Cruz, the singer Angèle or the actress Marion Cotillard.
But Chanel or Karl Lagerfeld creations are not the only ones to have been presented on the red carpet. American actress Sydney Sweeney, seen in the series “The White Lotus”, wore a Miu Miu embroidered dress, actress Anne Hathaway a sheath dress signed Versace, American actor Jeremy Strong, star of the series Successiona Prada set, or the singer Rihanna a breathtaking white set signed Valentino.
Humor also had its place, with a handful of celebrities paying tribute to Choupette, the Burmese cat – and heir – to Karl Lagerfeld. Jared Leto appeared in a white cat suit, while rapper Lil Nas X arrived with his face and body studded with 218,784 Swarovski crystals, including cat’s whiskers.
