Volkswagen (VW) seems to want to reconnect with its DNA: the car for everyone. The German group presented, Wednesday, March 15 in Hamburg, an electric car at less than 25,000 euros, the ID2all, entry product of its electric range (whose name of all vehicles begins with the letters ID). During a press conference detailing the brand’s results for 2022, its managing director, Thomas Schäfer, indicated that this vehicle would probably be manufactured from 2025 in Spain, probably at the Martorell plant, near Barcelona. , where the Seat and Cupra models, two other brands of the group, are also assembled on a new modular platform which will reduce costs.
The choice of the Spanish factory is partly explained by Seat’s loss of speed. The ID2all volumes would take over from the productions of the venerable Iberian brand, which would even be threatened with extinction. A reflection is underway on its future. If the success of the new small electric is there, it could also be assembled on the site of Navarra, another Spanish factory, in Pamplona.
Thursday, March 16 will also be laid in Spain the first stone of the Sagunto battery factory, near Valencia, VW’s second Gigafactory in Europe, after that of Salzgitter (Lower Saxony). The local production of battery cells and its integration into the group should also allow Volkswagen to lower the cost price of electric vehicles.
The brand has also announced that it wants to go further in accessibility, by working on the development of another vehicle, at less than 20,000 euros this one. Twenty thousand euros is the current price (before bonuses) of the Dacia Spring, produced by the Renault group in China, which finished second in February for electric car registrations in Europe. Thomas Schäfer, however, did not give further details on the project.
“As spacious as a Golf and as affordable as a Polo”
The ID2all, revealed on Wednesday evening, “does not compromise on quality, safety or excellence”, promises Thomas Schäfer. The vehicle will offer its users up to 450 kilometers of autonomy and a new design reminiscent of that of the first Golf. It will offer a parking and autonomous driving assistant as standard, a route planning system to plan car charging, a large touch screen and a magnetic, induction phone support and charging system. The ID2all wants to be “As spacious as a Golf and as affordable as a Polo”assures the press release of the mark, in reference to the two flagship models of the group.
